Yesterday I was all pumped to do my own mini triathlon at the gym. It was rainy and chilly outside so moving things indoors seemed natural. I wore my swim suit and packed spandex shorts, a sports bra, and a running tank, as well as socks and tennie shoes. My goggles and swim cap live in my gym bag and I keep a towel and a plastic bag (for wet stuff) in there too.
My plan: 20 minute swim, 30 minute bike, 20 minute run.
I hadn't ever done more than swim at the gym so I was a little anxious about what the rest of the gym would be like. You know how it is, sometimes you feel more comfortable in certain places than others, and I just wasn't sure what it would be like. Well, right when I walk in, I see signs all over the place "Pool Closed"... FOR. REAL?
The front desk staff assured me it would be open on Monday (thank goodness) but that it was in fact closed for the weekend so they could do whatever they needed to 'fix' it.
So my plan was not going to work. I changed from my swim stuff to the other clothes I brought and wondered around the gym trying to come up with a new plan. I knew I wanted to do a BRICK type workout but since I hadn't ever used a cycle bike or a treadmill at this gym I wasn't sure where they were.
They have a "women only" room near the locker rooms that has free weights and some cardio machines, but the only cycle bikes they had were the sit down/lay back, old people kind and the cardio machines were up against a mirror. Ugh. Who wants to watch themselves run?
Back into the main area I went. After a few loops I found an upright bike that was right in front of a treadmill and perfectly in front of a TV with a football game on it.
Reality: 5 miles biking, 1 mile run x3.
It took a lot longer than I thought it would and after my first mile ran, I got a little dizzy and had to slow down. Cycling the 5 miles took 15 minutes (too long) because I couldn't figure out the settings on the bikes and each mile I did took any where from 10 to 11 minutes. Overall I had to push to make it happen and I'm glad I did. But believe me- I was beat.
Naturally we had a political function to go to that evening and I wound up standing around in heels for several hours, which didn't help my legs (or my back).
Today I'm supposed to go pace a friend who needs to run 20 miles, but she is feeling under the weather. I may get on my bike trainer if she cancels.
